The White Sox are hoping to avoid the dreaded home sweep this afternoon as they face off against the West Sacramento A’s. The Sox are turning to a new face behind the plate in the form of Edgar Quero, who was called up yesterday. The young catcher has been lighting it up in Triple-A, and maybe, just maybe, he can inject some life into an offense that's currently hitting a sad .200.
On the mound for the White Sox will be Davis Martin, who has had a rollercoaster start to the season. He was brilliant in his first outing against the Angels (six scoreless innings), awful in his second start against the Tigers (seven earned runs in five innings), but bounced back in his last start, beating the Red Sox with one run allowed in six innings. He’ll be throwing to Quero this time around, and with any luck, they'll be able to provide some stability for a struggling team.
JP Sears, a lefty for the A’s, will be on the mound for the opposition. Sears isn't a power pitcher, topping out at 92 mph, but he excels in control. He’s had a couple of quality starts this season but struggled in his most recent outing, lasting just four innings against the Mets. Sears will face a White Sox lineup that has Quero batting seventh, just behind Lenyn Sosa, who’s had success against Sears, going 4-for-9 with a home run.
It’s worth noting that Martin will be pitching to a mostly unfamiliar A’s lineup, with no one having more than three at-bats against him, which could give the White Sox a slight advantage.
The weather for today’s game looks fantastic for baseball—66°F with mostly cloudy skies, and winds blowing right to left at about 18 mph. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. Central time, with the usual broadcast crew bringing you the action.
Let’s hope Edgar Quero can bring some much-needed energy to the Sox and maybe get them out of this slump.
